Issue Position: Spending

We must spend responsibly to keep our taxes low, balance our budget, and honor our existing commitments.

When Republicans took control of our state legislature in 2011, our budget was busted. Too many years of spending money we didn't have had caught up to us, and we faced a $2.5 Billion dollar structural budget deficit. The new leadership in Raleigh went to work. They turned this historic shortfall and years of budget deficits into a surplus.

We've continued to enjoy surpluses every year since, and we've done this while lowering taxes on all North Carolina families and small businesses. Now that our state's economy is really growing there are some that would like to see us return to our big spending ways. That would only put our state's finances in jeopardy and risk a return to damaging budget deficits and shortfalls. We must remember where we came from and continue to be diligent about every dollar we spend.

As a small business owner, I've seen first-hand the transformation of North Carolina's economy that has resulted from our state's successful efforts to reform our tax code and overhaul our regulatory system. North Carolina is now consistently at or near the top of every list of best states to start, build and grow a business. It's truly remarkable what has occurred.

However, we can't rest on our laurels. We must continue to examine ways to reform our regulatory system and continue reducing the tax burden on businesses to promote job creation and higher wages for North Carolina workers. We must also make sure that our economy grows in a way that doesn't leave behind certain communities and regions of our state.
